Better Than Fast Food! Classic Smash Burger Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 pounds Certified Angus Beef ® ground beef, 80/20 lean
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon grated yellow onion
2 teaspoons hot sauce
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
4 white hamburger buns
2 tablespoons butter, room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
4 slices American cheese
2 cups shredded iceburg lettuce
8 slices vine-ripe tomatoes

Easy Smash Burger Recipe

Instructions:

  • Portion the ground beef into 8 balls (approximately 3 oz each). If you prefer, you can use a kitchen scale to measure each ball precisely.
  • Place the beef balls in the fridge while you prepare other ingredients.
  • Grate ½ onion finely on a box grater until you have a smooth puree.
  • In a bowl, mix the grated onion with mayonnaise, yellow mustard, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce to create the special sauce. Skip the ketchup to avoid too much sugar.
  • Shred iceberg lettuce for that classic crunchy texture.
  • Slice tomatoes thinly, making sure they’re not thicker than the burger patties.
  • Heat a pan over medium heat, add butter, and toast the burger buns until golden brown. This should be done before cooking the patties.
  • Preheat your griddle or large pan to high heat.
  • Place the beef balls on the griddle, giving each plenty of room. Use parchment paper to press down on the balls, smashing them into thin patties with a meat mallet or spatula.
  • Season one side of the patties with salt and pepper while they cook. You can also add a little special sauce to the uncooked side to caramelize and enhance flavor.
  • Cook for about 2-3 minutes until the edges are crispy and golden. Flip the patties and add cheese (if using) to melt on top.
  • Spread special sauce on the bottom half of each toasted bun to prevent sogginess.
  • Layer the bottom bun with shredded lettuce and tomato slices.
  • Add the double smash patties (one with cheese and one plain) on top.
  • Close with the top bun.
  • For that classic fast food experience, wrap the burgers in parchment paper to keep them contained while you dig in.
